New Revolution For Weddings

By | August 24, 2010

When it comes to your wedding are you a traditionalist? Did you follow the pack and have a rather nice, if bland, wedding? Nowadays there really is no reason why you should, unless you want too, have a wedding that is anything like anybody else’s.

Weddings can be approached in numerous ways. When it comes to our family we seem to resist the temptation to stick with the traditional in favour of personalizing our weddings. When my wife and I got married we were still very young – not even out of our teens. Being teenage rebels didn’t help much in making the event palatable to our grandparents and the older friends of the family. We just decided to do it our own way. My wife wanted to go with a short wedding dress, and I only trimmed my hair, leaving it long, but slicking it back for the big day. At the time, my wife and I didn’t see the point of her changing her last name. With both of use working in at the same office it didn’t seem to be worth all of the hassle. Much later we looked into combining our names, as was the fashion at the time, however we dropped the idea as it seemed a little pretentious to us – not that there is anything wrong with doing this – it just wasn’t for us.

I have two younger sisters. Both are officially single, although one is rapidly approaching her big day. Both girls definitely have grand designs when it comes to their weddings. Although neither wants anything over-the-top or outrageously extravagant, both are sticking to our one family tradition: bucking the trend! For a start, my sister is insisting on having pink sapphires for her engagement ring. The ring that she seems pretty set on having does have a diamond in the centre. This stone is however flanked by two very prominent pink sapphires that my sister swears she’s will stick with forever.

These days every girl seems to want a solitaire diamond, and of course most of these diamonds simply have to be princess cut. My wife prefers that particular cut, or even the emerald cut, which has a nice look to it, but what’s the point of everybody choosing the exact same ring? Now when it comes to plans for weddings, it seems our society is made up of conformists with no ideas of their own. A wedding is supposed to be one of the most important, special days of your life – a time to flaunt your individuality and an opportunity to add personal flourishes every step of the way. With any luck we will not get to the stage where we have cloned or off the shelf weddings where the only things to change are the people taking part. Everybody is unique and their weddings should be too. Long live originality.
